This is a dear little hat I designed to go with the Emily sweater I made for our pastor's baby girl.

The hat is sized to fit a baby from six to twelve months.

Directions

Using Size U.S. 7 dpns, cast on 72 stitches across three needles (24 stitches per needle).

Join, being careful not to twist stitches.

Work Rounds 1 through 12 of the Pattern Stitch in the Round (see below) once through.

Work Rounds 1 through 8 a second time before beginning Decrease Rounds (see page 11).

Pattern Stitch

Rounds 1 & 2: Knit.

Round 3: K3, K2tog, K1, yf, *K9, K2tog, K1, yf*; repeat from * to * to within last 6 stitches of round, K6.

Round 4: K2, K2tog, K1, yf, *K9, K2tog, K1, yf*; repeat from * to * to within last 7 stitches of round, K7.

Round 5: K1, K2tog, K1, yf, *K9, K2tog, K1, yf*; repeat from * to * to within last 8 stitches of round, K8.

Round 6: *K2tog, K1, yf, K9*; repeat from * to * all the way around.

Rounds 7 & 8: Knit.

Round 9: K6, yf, K1, sl 1, K1, psso, *K9, yf, K1, sl 1, K1, psso*; repeat from * to * to within last 3 stitches, K3.

Round 10: K7, yf, K1, sl 1, K1, psso, *K9, yf, K1, sl 1, K1, psso*; repeat from * to * to within last 2 stitches, K2.

Round 11: K8, yf, K1, sl 1, K1, psso, *K9, yf, K1, sl 1, K1, psso*; repeat from * to * to within last 1 stitch, K1.

Round 12: *K9, yf, K1, sl 1, K1, psso*; repeat from * to * all the way around.

Repeat these 12 rounds for pattern stitch.

Decrease Rounds

DCR 1: *K6, K2tog*; repeat from * to * all the way around. (63 stitches)

DCR 2: Knit.

DCR 3: *K5, K2tog*; repeat from * to * all the way around. (54 stitches)

DCR 4: Knit.

DCR 5: (K8, K2tog, K8) across each needle. (51 stitches)

DCR 6: Knit.

DCR 7: (K4, K2tog, K5, K2tog, K4) across each needle. (45 stitches)

DCR 8: (K4, K2tog, K3, K2tog, K4) across each needle. (39 stitches)

DCR 9: (K3, K2tog, K3) across each needle. (33 stitches)

DCR 10: (K2, K2tog, K3, K2tog, K2) across each needle. (27 stitches)

DCR 11: (K1, K2tog, K3, K2tog, K1) across each needle. (21 stitches)

DCR 12: (K1, K2tog) twice, K1 across each needle. (15 stitches)

DCR 13: (K2tog, K1, K2tog) across each needle. (9 stitches)

DCR 14: (K2tog, K1) across each needle. (6 stitches)

Cut yarn, leaving a 12” tail.

With large tapestry needle, slip tail of yarn through each stitch and off of the needles in the order they would be knitted.

Pull up tight.

Thread yarn tail through to inside of hat through very center top of hat.

Knot the yarn securely on the inside of hat.

Weave ends to inside of hat, carefully securing ends.

Hat Band

With Size U.S. 6 16” circular needle, pick up and knit 73 stitches around brim of hat on wrong side of knitted fabric.

Join.

HB Round 1: *K1, P1* all the way around, end K1.

HB Round 2: *P1, K1* all the way around, end P1.

HB Round 3: Repeat HB Round 1.

HB Round 4: Repeat HB Round 2.

HB Round 5: (Increase Round) K1, P1, K1, MSSI (see explanation in white blox below), *(K1, P1) three times MSSI*; repeat from * to * to end (or as close to end of round as you can come).

HB Round 6: Repeat HB Round 2.

HB Round 7: Repeat HB Round 5.

Continue alternating repeats of Rounds 2 and 5 until you have worked a total of four Increase Rounds.

Cast off knitwise.

Cut yarn, leaving a 5” tail.

Weave yarn tails to underside of hat band, carefully securing ends.

Finishing

Sew button securely to center top of hat using sewing thread and needle.
